In the 1980s, Mercer Island bid farewell to its old Seattle connection and welcomed a new floating bridge adorned with twin tunnels. Interstate 90 boldly traversed the island’s northern tip, creating an environmentally conscious marvel—the most creatively designed stretch of interstate in the United States. Amidst this transformation, Mercer Island unveiled the 22-acre Park on the Lid, a recreational haven with playfields, tennis courts, and green spaces suspended above the interstate lanes.

As the Puget Sound Region adapts to growth, Mercer Island eagerly anticipates the arrival of the Sound Transit Light Rail. This eco-friendly mode of transportation will crisscross the island, connecting residents and visitors alike. Where Sustainability Meets History

Long before settlers arrived, legends swirled around Mercer Island. The Duwamish Indians, our predecessors, believed an enigmatic spirit inhabited the island. They cautiously gathered wild berries during the day, avoiding the island’s supposed nocturnal submersion and resurrection. Pioneers risked it all on the “sinking island.” In 1860, Judge Thomas Mercer and the Olds family—the island’s “first family”—settled here in 1885.
